I am Sooz |
My name is Susan Allen, call me Sooz and my greatest love (outside of family and friends) is the computer. With this page I will introduce myself, and share what brought me to where I am now. Using some of the things I have discovered so far can inevitably help you avoid the mistakes and pitfalls which I have encountered on my way to the present. I will share with you what I have learned up to this point in my life and on the Internet. My dream and hope for Sooz58.com is to create an environment, for you to visit where you, and any interested person can use my tools, learn from the mistakes I have made, and hopefully, become the person they want to be. I want to make it easy for you to access what I know.I was born the youngest of six children in Seattle, Washington. At the age of 18 and 1/2 I quit college to become an electricians apprentice. I could not afford to continue pursuing my college education at that time and, since I had tagged along with my Dad, who was a commercial electrician when younger I already had a few skills 'in the field' as they say. This short stint turned into a career as a commercial electrician which lasted 22 years. When I started at 18 and 1/2 I was willing to do anything within reason to achieve the Journeyman License in Washington. There was a little static when the regular construction fellas saw me on the jobsite for the first time, never having seen a female in hard hat and work boots yet, but over time we got to know one another and they made their best try to treat me as an apprentice and not a "girl" or a "lady". I understood their position and used caution not to ruffle anyones feathers, ask them to change their regular routine because I was present, or try to change the english language. I just wanted to be like everyone else and get through the program. Physically the actual work took it's toll. This happens to men also. I have had a total of 3 knee surgeries and was looking forward to 2 hand surgeries in 1998. I felt as though my entire world was falling apart, but knew I had to make the change to another line of work. Towards February of 1998 I finally cleared the career retraining grant with Labor and Industries to begin basic computer classes. How exciting! My daughter, then in second grade suddenly had a new toy in the house to play with, along with the rest of the family. Almost instantaneously I became consumed with the possibilities of what could be done with a computer. The computer I brought home from school was a great source of entertainment for all of us from the beginning. I was designing newsletters typing out letters and fooling around with all of the basic programs continually. I had been going over to my neighbors house to go on the Internet for months previous to starting the class. Mainly, being able to go on the Internet was my main goal. I simply could not get the computer I had brought home from school to go online! But after trying everything I could think of including taking it apart, I discovered the reason I could not go online was there was no modem inside. Upon the dissolution of my marriage I decided to move from California back to Washington State where my Mother lives. I left my home in a distressed hurry and had absolutey nothing. I mean zero! No car, no bank account and basically my daughter and I had the clothes on our backs. Let's just say it was a new beginning, a starting point. In the back of my mind was the possibility of some day using the computer to make a living. Why not enjoy what you do for a living? Why work for someone else when you can work for yourself? And, who wants to be in rush hour traffic, or really sick with the flu and have to go to work knowing you might spread it to others, but are afraid you could lose your job if you stayed home? The popularity and usefulness of computer use is in it's baby stages right now with no where to go but up! With this in mind what better place to focus a career than the Internet and computers! I remember telling my Mom about my 'GREAT IDEA' and her laughingly replying, "You do not even have a car yet, not to mention a job! Get serious and buckle down to a regular way of life like all the rest of us." Well, that was a fact. It was sad, but true and the thought of putting off my dream until a later day hurt deeply. I knew then that I had to start really small. By "small" I mean with only thoughts of reaching out to others via the Internet, and plans to put a business or two together. My hopes were to set a good example for my daughter, be home when she got home from school, and build a business which family and friends could benefit from over time. With all these great ideas I could not only enjoy life but be doing what I want to do with my life! Limiting values being as they were, I knew I would have to wait until I got our living situation and finances in better shape. That was January 1st, 2000. January 1st, 2000 was the day I decided to plan to some day use the computer and the Internet to earn a living. Since then I have found a partner (we met on the internet, of course!) who means the world to me, and SURPRISE! he didn't laugh at my ideas, hopes and dreams. He was actually thinking along the same lines and had similar ideas for his future. I have found that it can seem much more doable and can be way more fun when you have someone to share your dreams and aspirations with.
