City Torn Between a Squiggle and Leaf

This is the buzz in our town today! I ask myself have the residents and the City Council, Business owners finally come to their senses and agreed on an entry sign design for our fine city? Yay! This makes me happy because we ALL want our entry sign to represent us- the residents.

Upon closer inspection I discovered...the notation suggested in the past "Bakersfield CA Life As It Should Be" is not up on the table for the entry logo any longer. In a way, even though as residents we feel this is life as it should be, for us anyway...it is not necessarily a welcoming phrase. It could even be misconstrued as locals saying we represent the right way of thinking versus the other.
Personally I like the agriculture and small downtown surrounded by mountains combined sign shown here in my blog...a picture's worth a thousand words.

If 2006 is the Year of the Squiggle, 2007 might not be the Year of the Leaf.

A disagreement between proponents of the two dueling city logos popped up in a city committee meeting Thursday as Councilwoman Jacquie Sullivan disagreed with two other council members that the city's "squiggle" logo should be replaced by the "leaf" logo on new city entrance signs.

After Councilwomen Sue Benham and Irma Carson expressed their support for revamping the city's image by using the leaf, Sullivan -- the chairwoman of the city Community Services committee -- declared her support for the decade-old squiggle that is affixed on everything from city letterheads to restroom tiles at City Hall.

"It'd be hard, to me, to do away with this look," Sullivan said. "It's immediately identifiable ... It's a symbol of our city."

City staff proposed several designs for potential new entrance signs, but Sullivan was disappointed that the squiggle wasn't included in any of the designs.

All of the proposals would have incorporated a new logo: a scripted-font "Bakersfield" with a leaf dotting the "i," without using the tagline "Life as It Should Be." A landscape of both urban buildings and agricultural fields, backed by mountains, were on the new design.

That was an image supported by Sheryl Barbich, head of Vision 2020, a group of community activists focused on improving the city and its image.

Benham denied the meeting was tense, but at one point she asked assistant city attorney Janice Scanlan to step in to prod Sullivan to call for a vote on Benham's motion.

Benham's motion was passed, 3-0. It called for one proposal, costing $119,000 -- about $30,000 less than another proposal -- to be sent to the City Council for a vote. It also accommodated Sullivan's wishes by having city staff come up with an alternate design that would still incorporate the squiggle into the design.

City Council will have at least those two designs to choose from when it comes before them, sometime early next year.

After the meeting, Benham and Barbich expressed doubt that Vision 2020 would start fundraising for the monuments if the squiggle design was used.

It was hoped that corporations or citizens would pitch in to help fund the new entrance signs.

Barbich said the whole idea of the new design was to eliminate the squiggle and replace it with a more positive image that would "put the field back in Bakersfield."

Sullivan wanted one more meeting to see other designs using the squiggle, but Benham and Carson believed the discussion on the logo just among the three of them had gone long enough.

It's now up to the City Council to decide, they said.
