KernRiverValley Audubon Butterfly Festival
KernRiverValley-Audubon - Butterfly Festival Slideshow
Yesterday we drove just past the south end of Lake Isabella to the Awesome Kern River Valley Audubon wildlife refuge for the Butterfly Festival. This hour and a half drive is not for the faint hearted as the road twists and turns at will requiring you to reduce speeds to 25 mph in places.
On parts the road has been improved making it feel as if you are riding a magic carpet. This is true especially after enduring the old road for a while. If you have extra time bring your camera, find safe turn-outs and snap a few photos of the mighty Kern River below. It IS beautiful!
We arrived around 10:00 AM to find the bustling festival-gooers already grouping at tables, situated around the plant and flower lady and basically beginning their own nature walks through the carefully labled woods.
Trees and plants were specially brought in in an Experimental area of forest for the purpose of attracting, providing habitat for, creating nesting and feeding opportunities for these incredible little birds.
As we walked it dawned on us (I with tank top and shorts) we ought to have brought mosquitoe repellant of some sort. We were the main course for at least 10 mosquitoes at a time upon closer observance.
So, we dashed into the Visitors Center where there was a screened door, made our donation and began to be even more amazed.
My daughter could be heard 100 feet away calling out, "Mom! Mom! Look at these bees! They're all labled!" and "Wow! Check the butterfly display case!"
Oh, there were also hummingbird skeletons, labled of course, maps, more bugs, all neatly arranged, labled and in glass cases, post cards along with historical and Audubon information.
It is definitely worth checking out if you are visiting the area, a wildlife enthusiast, love birding, like hummingbirds, or want to go someplace cool to show your kids something neet!
But don't just take my word for it, take a look at the Website, and go see it for yourself!
